Meet Emily Levin-Rosenshine

One Young Professional Transformed by Dance

FMC's ASM Student - Emily Levin-Rosenshine

When you give to FMC, you’re not just supporting dance education. You’re opening doors, and building community for young people across Chicago.

Just ask Emily, an alum of our After School Matters Dance Collaborative.

My mom put me in dance classes as young as 3 years old, and I basically grew up in the dance studio. She was my main supporter, driving me to every class and rehearsal, and cheering me on at every performance. Unfortunately, when I was 12 years old, she was diagnosed with cancer, and a little more than a year later, she passed away.

Due to my mom’s passing and additional family issues, I no longer had the support to pursue dance. I dealt with a lot of instability in high school: I moved three times, attended three high schools, and faced a hostile environment at home. I did not even step into a dance studio my first two years of high school. Although I danced at home in my living room, I lost the connection to others and helpful instruction that strengthened my early years practicing dance.

However, I was introduced to Pierre and Forward Momentum Chicago through participating in FMC’s After School Matters (ASM) Program the fall of my senior year. I also completed FMC’s summer ASM program before heading to college. It meant so much to learn in an environment where I could connect with youth my age about our shared passions and interests. As a dancer, I wasn’t defined by my trauma, instability at home, or pressure to perform at school. Instead of feeling isolated, I was united with my fellow peers, who I’m sure had struggles of their own. As part of the ASM program, I really enjoyed getting to connect with youth from all over the city, especially those with different backgrounds from me.

I ultimately chose not to dance professionally, and I am currently pursuing my Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree at the University of California, San Diego. However, I still apply the skills I learned from FMC in my personal and professional life, and despite the intensity of my coursework, I even still spend time in the dance studio. In fact, I met my long-term romantic partner in a dance class, and dance has served an important role in our relationship.

As an organization, FMC provides belonging, stability, and learning to the community through the art of dance, particularly for youth with limited arts access. I was privileged to have access to dance for half my childhood, and I know that so many Chicago youth have never had that privilege. Dance is a crucial way to connect with others, stay physically active, and always be a learner. I am inspired and honored to strengthen FMC’s mission and programs as a donor, alum, and avid supporter.

Your support sustains the FMC programs that inspire dreams, and shape futures leaders. Behind every gift is a story of growth, resilience, and opportunity – stories made possible because of you. As we look ahead, we’re committed to reaching even more students. Thank you for being a part of our community, and believing in the power of dance to change lives.
